Western Wonderland’ – UP Sleeper

Union Pacific ordered 12 cars from American Car & Foundry built with 12 roomettes and 4 bedrooms.  Delivered in 1949, these cars were given the prefix ‘Western’. In this same order were two cars for the C&NW and the Wabash ordering ten.  Four of the Wabash’s ten cars were used in the pool for the UP’s City of St. Louis while the other six Wabash cars were painted blue and used in other service.

The Western Series cars were very popular and could be found on every U.P. ‘City’ train at some point in time.

In 1965, the demand for more bedrooms lead the UP to convert their Western Series to eleven bedroom cars. These were then renamed with the prefix ‘Sun’, and the ‘Sun Series’ was born.

RailSmith has tooled some new parts and used existing ‘Pullman’ parts to create this never-before-in-N-Scale sleeper! So we call this a Classic version and another great train story!

One of UP’s 12 Western Series cars is Western Wonderland.    This car name is perfect as we commemorate the 150th anniversary of  Yellowstone the first National Park, March 1872-2022.  In those early days Yellowstone was known as ‘the wonderland’  because Alice in Wonderland, the book, had recently been published.  The car Western Wonderland will have a special commemorative insert marking this moment in time. Read more about the Yellowstone Celebration story.

Trust us, you will love it!

One last note about ‘Limited Edition’. As we go into production the quantities are set as our best guess of demand for that item. That said, as other cars we have produced for the past 30 years, a particular road name will not be rerun.

I look forward to continuing to buy trains from my favorite special run train maker. That’s how I think of you now, “The Train Maker”.  And speaking of cool trains, I just received a box loaded with great looking Texas Special cars. Thanks.  I certainly look forward to all the new releases you are planning.

I just received the “The Great Locomotive Chase” set from the Walt Disney Family Museum. Very nicely done!

Just a quick note to acknowledge receipt of my AFT Tool Car. Thanks so much for another Outstanding Piece of Craftsmanship! The AFT is my most prized “N” Scale collection. I had perceived that there were delays in getting this last car into our hands, but thought it was a problem with China. Your letter…

Every new release from your Signature Series gets me revved up for the rails.

The thing I love about all the things you do is the fact that everything is so well thought out, so beautiful and so unique.

Lowell, thanks to you and your company SP&S modelers (myself included) are having a much easier time modeling the North Bank Road. Thank you for your hard work!

I am looking forward to many more releases in the new year. I stayed up really late on Christmas to talk to Santa when he came by our house. I asked him for an n-scale SP&S 700, and he said that was out of his league and I’d better call you.

I received my observation/business car today and – like all of my other cars from you – I love it!
