GREAT NORTHERN – E7  #510

Broadway Limited Imports has been commissioned to produce the  GN #510 in this Empire Builder version for our Build-a-Train series.

The GN bought 31 EMD E-7 A units. Beginning in 1945 they were delivered in the stunning ‘Omaha Orange & Pullman Green’ paint that had been adopted in 1941. The #510 and #512 arrived in 1947 just in time for the new streamlined Empire Builder. The E7’s in back-to-back A unit configuration were assigned the Builder until late 1951 when they were replaced by EMD F units. The new F units proved to be better suited for the mountain grades of the GN.  All of the E units then served out their very useful careers being assigned to every GN passenger train other than the Empire Builder. Two E7’s even served on the Western Star in the early 1950’s between Seattle and Skykomish where the Star was transferred to electric motors and a heater car to Wenatchee.

The short haul streamliners were also much shorter trains, usually consisting of an RPO baggage, coaches and a diner lounge. The Winnipeg Limited carried sleepers and the Coast Pool Train between Seattle and Portland might carry a connecting sleeper if needed.

Our special run of these GN engines will include the number plate between the headlights as shown in some of these photos. This number board was used in the early version and is a recognizable to that time period. The number plate does not come attached, so you will need to do that. This allows the flexibility for you to choose the later version of the E7 when that number board (between the headlights) was removed.  You get to choose, and we feel this optional detail will meet everybody’s need.

We are taking deposits only right now, with ‘Final Payment’ link to be added very close to delivery next year.

This is a newly tooled E7 both DC (Stealth) and DCC (Paragon4) are being offered. You will need to choose.

Broadway Limited’s ‘Stealth‘ version comes with a DC board that can be removed and a DCC  board (with sound if you desire) such as ESU Next18. But whatever you choose, be sure to follow that manufacturers suggested ‘drop in’ for this application.

This selection, is a deposit for the DCC Paragon 4 GN 510.     DCC with sound, the total cost is expected to be $269.

About six weeks before delivery we will create a web page for E-7 ‘FINAL PAYMENT’. Please watch for that then to complete your purchase.

All aboard for the Great Northern!
