Description

Presenting the SP Hamburger Grill #10402 in Silver & Red.

Southern Pacific had five cars built in 1949 by Pullman-Standard, they designated as ‘Coffee Shop-Lounge’. Three of the cars were delivered for service on the Golden State, and two of the cars went to the City of San Francisco (COSF). In 1955, the Golden State cars were pulled from that train as the Rock Island took over food service at that time. The three cars were then converted to what the ESPEE called Hamburger Grill-Lounge cars. The railroad was capitalizing on the popularity of burgers and milk shakes in the early 1950 drive-in restaurants. This also helped the SP economize service at the same time appeal to a current trend.  There were numerous heavy-weight Hamburger Grill cars on the ESPEE, but these three were the only streamlined ‘lightweight’ cars. The two COSF cars remained as Coffee Shop-Lounge cars on that train. More about those cars when they are released.

This car #10402, was one of the three cars, and a perfect addition to our line-up as this era when the SP launched their red & silver scheme, loved burgers!

All of this information is according to the Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society. Read more about it in their epic book ‘Southern Pacific Passenger cars volume 4: Dining Service Cars’.

RailSmith Hamburger Grill-Lounge features: the ‘best burgers on the rails’ as well as an accurate newly tooled diner that includes antenna and correct roof exhaust vents as used in this time period. No skirting on this car as era appropriate. And speaking of time period, these cars were picked by Amtrak, but were retired in 1973. That makes these great for Amtrak’s ‘Rainbow Era’ as well!

This is a ‘Classic’ car that you need, coming Summer 2023!

My kids absolutely love the Christmas cars! The C.K. Holiday, along with the Carolwood and Disney cars makes a wonderful Christmas train. It made many a loop under our tree this year.

Wow… You made my dream come true with the CK Holiday! I am a great admirer of your work.

“You have no idea how excited I am about these cars . . .”

Just a quick note to acknowledge receipt of my AFT Tool Car. Thanks so much for another Outstanding Piece of Craftsmanship! The AFT is my most prized “N” Scale collection. I had perceived that there were delays in getting this last car into our hands, but thought it was a problem with China. Your letter…

I am looking forward to many more releases in the new year. I stayed up really late on Christmas to talk to Santa when he came by our house. I asked him for an n-scale SP&S 700, and he said that was out of his league and I’d better call you.

I received my #99 business card in the mail today. It looks superb. Thank you for another wonderful job. You are really filling a niche.

Every new release from your Signature Series gets me revved up for the rails.

I look forward to continuing to buy trains from my favorite special run train maker. That’s how I think of you now, “The Train Maker”.  And speaking of cool trains, I just received a box loaded with great looking Texas Special cars. Thanks.  I certainly look forward to all the new releases you are planning.
