Description

#5402 – Union Pacific ‘Chair Car’

Built in 1941 by Pullman-Standard, this car number 5402 was one of 15  ‘chair cars’ ordered by the Union Pacific to be assigned to The Challenger and other streamliners. Two of these cars actually made it to the roster of Amtrak.

(Some railroads used the word ‘Chair Car’ and others used the word ‘coach’, but all mean the same.)

When delivered, it was painted in the ‘Challenger’ scheme. It was also delivered with skirts which were later removed. In 1947 it was given the Armor Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray scheme that we still see today.

This is a Classic version of these cars and to the era of this paint scheme, with skirts. See this B&W image of the Challenger scheme as well as the window style.

See the City of San Francisco Coach Fleet 2,  for special pricing on both the SP & UP coaches!

More can be read about these cars in the book Union Pacific’s Streamliners by Kratville and also in the Pullman Standard Library Volume 14.

Just a quick note to acknowledge receipt of my AFT Tool Car. Thanks so much for another Outstanding Piece of Craftsmanship! The AFT is my most prized “N” Scale collection. I have never been treated as graciously and in a manner more suited to a VIP in my life, as I was on our train trip.  It’s obvious how you’ve made your life a success story.  Looking around the train and seeing your friends I’m pretty sure they  were all made to feel very special by you, and your…

I am looking forward to many more releases in the new year. I stayed up really late on Christmas to talk to Santa when he came by our house. I asked him for an n-scale SP&S 700, and he said that was out of his league and I’d better call you.
