Description

Presenting the SP observation #9044  in silver & red on the 1958+ Cascade!

Southern Pacific had a total of nine blunt-end observations. The paint scheme of these for the assigned trains, would evolve over time. In 1958 the Sunset Limited scheme of silver with the thin red stripe, so loved by the ESPEE brass, was adopted to be what they called the General Service scheme. Not to be confused with the Golden State silver & red which was slightly different.

So it was in 1958, that the Cascade was ‘freshened up’ from the two-tone-gray scheme to this new silver scheme.

A total of three blunt-end cars wore the General Service scheme. Two wore the Golden State ‘simulated stainless steel’. scheme.

This car #9044, was one of those three ‘GS’ cars.

according to the Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society, three of the blunt-end Obersvations were painted in the General Service scheme of silver with the red stripe. The two Golden State cars were painted in a variation of the silver & red yet different from the General Service scheme. Actual photo here of 9040 on the City of San Francisco.

The Cascade logo on the drumhead was removed at this time, so no drumhead decoration is on this car 9044.

RailSmith Blunt End Observation features: accurate newly tooled end detail including operating rear light, photo etched door safety bar, period and car accurate drumhead (not lit), as well as Micro-Trains True Scale Coupler on the rear of the car.
