Description

Two NP Prototype Sleepers  – decorated in this, the ‘Panama’ scheme, of the Illinois Central!

In 1950’s and 1960’s, the Illinois Central borrowed sleepers for use in their winter seasons. It seems the IC never had enough sleepers for the flow of passengers going to the popular south in the winter.

The Northern Pacific leased these two floor plans of sleepers to the IC in the winter seasons, but not every year.  The IC, insisted that they were painted in the brown & orange scheme for the City of Miami. At the end of the season, the IC painted them back into the NP colors for return to the North Coast Limited.

Other Pullmans that were also painted in this distinctive scheme came from the C&NW, CRIP, NYC, DL&W, N&W, CB&Q, UP and the NP.  That is quite a line up!

IN THIS ORDER:

Sleepers with floor plan 4119,  built in 1947 by Pullman-Standard, these cars were part of an eighteen car order, the first cars for the streamlined North Coast Limited. We see three of these cars #360, #361 & #363 in City of Miami consists.

The distinctive NP Dome Sleepers were also sometimes sent to the IC in this situation. All of these cars show ‘Pullman’ in the lettering board with the owning railroad initials in the upper corners.

There are two road numbers being produced at this time, for the City of Miami consist. This offer is for the NP/IC Leased Sleeper Pair. These are Prototype cars that includes Duplex Sleeper #360 and Dome Sleeper #311 and are not available separately.

The source for this information is from the Terminal Railroad Assn of St.Louis Historical & Technical Society. This is an amazing organization documenting the history of the trains that traveled through St Louis.
