Great Northern Dome Coach #1320
In 1967 the GN changed their look from Omaha Orange and Pullman Green to Big Sky Blue. Â Although it was not as popular as they hoped, the GN had painted a good portion but not all of their cars this new Big Sky Blue. So in the late sixties, it was common to see the Empire Builder and other GN trains in a mix of these two schemes.
To make it more interesting, the talk of merger with the other Hill lines had been in the air for years. Â Only a few cars were given this pre-merger experimental paint known as Cascade Green. Â In just a couple of years, this would be the executives choice for their new railroad, the Burlington Northern.
This is a PROTOTYPE version of this Dome Coach. We learned from well known rail historian and friend Charles Rudisel that when the experimental paint was applied, that the opposite side of this car was painted white up to the roof sill. This was a short lived experiment and our version will be the same on both sides.
